Federal Bureau of Investigation

Wildcard Corp. works closely with the FBI to architect, host, and maintain fbi.gov

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is one of the most publicly visible U.S. federal government organizations, with law enforcement and intelligence responsibilities for the most complex cases at the international, federal, state, and local levels.

Needed: A Large-Scale, Sophisticated Communication Tool

The FBI employs 35,000 people in 400 offices throughout the U.S. and 60 embassies around the world. An organization of this size and breadth requires a large-scale, sophisticated communication tool that can streamline the creation, review, and publication of news and other information resources.

The fbi.gov website is the FBI’s primary asset for communicating with the national and international public. Architected and managed by Wildcard Corp., the website handles traffic on the order of 16 million hits daily (5.8 billion hits annually) and integrates with a custom Wildcard-developed email delivery system that sends over 1 million emails a day.

Built, Secured, and Deployed by Wildcard

Wildcard’s cybersecurity and world-scale deployment experts built the site using the enterprise-class Plone content management system (CMS).  The site can handle staggering traffic loads; High-profile news such as the capture of infamous terrorists will generate traffic to the FBI site reaching over 150,000 hits per second.

The site is safeguarded by a Wildcard-designed smart cache network and is a read-only replica of the firewalled, internal content editing site. It is able to withstand sustained Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyber attacks at levels that have crippled other government and corporate systems.

Streamlined Editing and Flexibility

The site serves over 125,000 content items consisting of a mix of text, PDFs, images, video, podcasts, and blogs. Created by 130 content editors located around the world, this content goes through customized publication workflows, upload quotas, and finely-grained delegated security.

For non-native English readers, Wildcard integrated the site with Google Translate to support 91 different languages. Internal service integrations include the FBI’s email delivery system, a large-scale search engine, and other business process management systems.
